1.Plan Your Outfits
If this is the first time doing a family photo shoot, you really need to take some time to coordinate your families’ outfits. I always start with my kids. I find out what colors work best for them. They seem to look washed out in reds. Deep pinks, blues, purples, teals have been some of our past colors which work for their skin tone.
Then I work on myself. Usually, I do something solid, neutral and that blends in. My husband is always easy. He seems to have a dress shirt in every color. This year we were a little more matchy than the past.
Also, don’t wait until the day before to try and coordinate your holiday looks. Give yourself plenty of time, so you’re not rushing and racing.
2. Give Your Family Plenty Of Time To Get Ready
You know how long it takes just to get out of your house. For us, it’s at least 30 minutes. Make sure everyone has had a snack, diaper change, bathroom break and so on before you get ready to leave. The moms are always the last ones to get ready, so make sure you take care of you first. Then everything will fall into place and you’re not panicking or feeling rushed.
3. Hire A Good Photographer
This is the easy part. Make sure you hire a good photographer and one that is great with kids. Derek Minton Photography did our photo shoot this holiday season.
Not only is Derek a local dad, but he has an amazing photographer. It was the end of the day and the girls had already played soccer and been to a gymnastics party. They were acting pretty silly. He was so patient and also really easy going. We were done in less than an hour. Everyone survived!!
I know you’ve been thinking about getting family photos taken and the holiday season has arrived. You can book your session now until December 31st. You can do holiday inspired, update your family photos or do a New Year family collection.
