Heather M.: Today, I am here talking about how to find that mom tribe you are looking for, so welcome to Live from the Playroom. I’m Heather McMechan with Local Mom Scoop, and today we are here the Peter Blum Y of Boca Raton.
I am here today with some amazing moms who are going to share the scoop about why they love it here at the Y so much.
We’re going to talk about:
What’s the Y Mom Group?
What does the YMCA have to offer
What’s next for the Y moms?
What initially brought you to the YMCA of South Palm Beach County?
Lauren: I grew up in Boca, and I had moved away for several years, had young children when we moved back a few years ago. Initially, I was just looking for a place to work out that had good childcare, and my sister told me about the YMCA.
So I came by for a tour and I saw all the offerings that there were as far as equipment and classes. Then I went into the childcare area where it’s not just babysitting, it’s almost like a mini-preschool that they have in there for the kids while the moms are working out.
After being 100% sold, I signed up for that reason, became a member right away.
Emily: Hi. My name is Emily. I came here to the Y when I just had my new baby. was looking to get out of my house like all new moms, and my husband was working.
I needed to find something to do with myself because I didn’t have a lot of friends when I moved here. My family is in North Jersey. I needed to get back into fitness. I needed to find something to do with a couple of hours in my day, so I came to the YMCA. The childcare was amazing. You can’t beat it, so my daughter loved it. I found some sanity. I found some amazing best friends, and then I kept coming.
Kelly: I came to the YMCA a friend had asked me if I wanted to try Zumba, and I had never tried it before. I was struggling to meet people and make friends. I had two-year-old twin boys, and my grandmother had just passed away and my mother had passed away. I really didn’t have a lot of family around or friends that had children, and so one day I just said, “Okay, I’ll go try with you,” and I went and I tried Zumba, and I absolutely fell in love with it. I joined the Y that day.
There were girls in that class. I said, “So will I see you next week?” and they were like, “Next week? What do you mean? We’re coming back Wednesday.” I’m like, “What? You do this more than once a week?” I didn’t even know anything about anything, and I had met my entire .. my first Zumba crew within a couple of weeks, and it really just changed my whole life because, over years now, I’ve been there for almost seven years.
What are you doing now for the YMCA of South Palm Beach County because of that?
Lauren: Right now, I’m also volunteering for the YMCA. I am part of the volunteer leadership board here at the Boca Y and then I also serve on the marketing committee. It’s been a really great experience because the people that … from the community that
Emily: I got a hot job here. I started teaching group exercise. I got my personal training certificate. I am now the member engagement director here and in Boynton Beach, so this is like my home away from home, and I love all the Y moms, and my kids have grown up here. Now I have two children, six and three, and they just spend most of their free time here honestly inside the Y, so it’s a great place to be and a great place for families. I’m grateful for the Y.
Kelly: It took me from never having stepped foot into a class to becoming an instructor. I love that because I get to connect with people. I think through the moms’ group, a lot of people who may not have known me are showing up to my classes because I go post in there, “Hey, come join me. Come dance with me,” and several people have come in said, “Oh, I found you on the Y Moms Group. It’s a great way just to connect in general. They think that we’re different or something, but we’re just other moms here at the Y and we want friends, too.
What is the Y Mom Group and How Can I Be A Part of It?
Emily: It starts with signing up for a membership and just coming to be part of this group. It’s really just a support system and support group that we have, and you join us on our social media site on Facebook and you just connect with us really, and we plan events together. We do some outings.
We plan play dates. We get coffee. We have lunch together. We do workouts, plan workouts here and in Boynton Beach, and it’s really just connecting with one another and creating that community of moms.
Lauren: The other thing I love is the YMCA offers so much to our community. It’s even just hard to describe everything that the YMCA does, but it gives us an opportunity as we’re connecting to be able to share what we love most about the YMCA and how
I might not know about like the swim lessons or the preschool or the Y bikes or something that another mom is doing with their family, but because they share it on that Facebook group, now I know about it and maybe now I have a friend that I can go and participate with, so it’s great to engage more with the YMCA and to take advantage of all the things that the Y has to offer.
Heather M.: Yeah, and speaking of that, so playing off of that also, so not only can you work out here and do and have childcare and just recharge and get your sanity back, but you also have so many family events and activities.
WHAT EVENTS DO YOU HAVE FOR Y MOMS?
Emily: Halloween at the Y.
Heather M.: In case I just moved to the neighborhood and I don’t have anybody to trick-or-treat with, there’s a way that I can come?
Emily: Oh, yeah, Halloween at the Y here is huge. We blow it out of the water. We do a haunted house, a not-so-haunted house.
