It’s Day 7 without power! The morning texts are rolling in wanting to know the big question that’s been on everyone’s mind all week.
Do you have power back?
Unfortunately, like some of my friends, I still have the same answer.
But even though I don’t have power, my spirits are lifted by the friends who have checked on me each day and offered any assistance we might need. I’m lucky that I’ve been able to stay at my parent’s house who finally got power just a few days ago.
This was a storm that what was pretty powerful. You can never really prepare for something like this. When I went through Hurricane Wilma, I didn’t have a generator or power for 14 days. I remember sleeping in my family room with the windows open and pouring boiling water through a coffee filter (I was desperate). No one knew if we would be celebrating Thanksgiving dinner.
It’s crazy to see how Hurricane Irma wrecked my city and South Florida. She was also super selective on who kept their power and who didn’t.
I’ve had friends who never lost power or got it back soon after. But then you find out the rest of their family was completely without power. So, with the 100-degree heat every day, thank goodness they had somewhere to go. Other friends just got power on Day 6. I’m sure they are thrilled as their cleanup and days of laundry begin.
My family is starting to lose it as back-to-school totally approaches. But I just keep thinking about the destruction I’ve seen throughout the state like the Florida Keys, the West Coast of Florida and the Harvey victims.
It makes me happy to know I still have a home to go to.
